It is 9 March 1948 at Port Victoria, South Australia and the ketch Hawk awaits the departure of the ketch Falie so that she can bring the last load of bagged grain alongside the Finnish four-masted barque Viking.
This will bring the total number of bags to 50,950 – over 4000 tonnes, that Viking will take around Cape Horn to be unloaded in the Millwall Dock, London.
The bags were hoisted on board and stowed by shore based stevedores who had the job of carrying the 180 pound (80Kg) bags on their shoulders and dropping them exactly into place to form an interlocking pattern that would prevent them shifting when at sea. Some bags were slit to allow loose grain to fill the spaces between the bags.
Viking, pronounced ‘Veeking’ by the Finnish crews, was built in Denmark in 1906 by Burmeister and Wain as a cargo carrying training ship but in 1922 passed into the ownership of Finnish Shipowner, Gustaf Erikson. Laid up in Mariehamn during the WW2, she made one voyage after the war in 1948. This took her from Mariehamn to East London, Santos in Brazil and thence to Port Victoria.
The 4-masted barque Lawhill which loaded grain in Pt. Victoria at this time is seen in the distance under sail – destination Biera in Portuguese East Africa.
